Cleveland's Rainbow Wranglers host their Third Annual Spring Round-up
Doing a little fundraising and having a little fun
by Charlton Harper
Call me Rip Van Winkle, but last time I really paid attention to country music, Dolly still sang with Porter Waggoner and Tanya Tucker was something like 16 years old.
I mean, sure I've heard about this new country. I know Garth Brooks can pack a stadium and there's only one Judd now instead of two.
But I didn't know anything about the Funky Cowboy.
That's what the Rainbow Wranglers are doing down at the Ohio City Oasis on Sunday nights.
House
The Funky Cowboy.
I can imagine a tired cowboy, or a singing cowboy. Depending on my state of mind, I might even conjure up a horny cowboy. But funky cowboy?
Take a funky, just barely twangy beat, a generous portion of booted dancers wearing everything from polo shirts to the complete cowpoke look, and you've got an evening of boot scootin' fun.
Sunday night starts off with lessons from 6 to 8 pm., with open dancing following at 8:30. You see all types of ability and sur-
HOUSE OF ST. JAMES
by Steven St. James
Shortwave, DBX, Excellerate Records Breaking through from Chicago, Dan Bell gives us a four song EP featuring the old school sound of Chicago. As soon as this EP was released it already sold thousands, just by word of mouth. Some people think this is where house is going, but in my opinion, it is far too subtle to pique interest long enough.
Away, Soofle, Snap Records
Imagine you're in a cheesy Euro-seventies film where you see people in the funkiest clothes drinking cocktails at a swanky party. The music you'd probably hear would sound like this cut. Soofle is a new group from France with a very lounge-y, ambient sound. It contains smooth as silk piano melodies that make it a must for house junkies.

Records
Never mind the political or religious undertones, this cut is soon to be a major hit. Maybe as large as Sagats Funk Dat. Simply because it will sell, and probably cross over, play it before it's played out.
Trance
Into Nature, Hardfloor, Harthouse Records
A thorough various styles of Trance, this EP has four money-earnin' mixes by such greats as Richie Hawtin and my favorite remixer, Tom Norman. Today labels in Detroit are attempting to change the views, and come out with new sounds.
The Human, Harthouse Records
Resistance D,
Another Harthouse group you should definitely check out is Resistance D. A fine blend of classical Muzak, chaotic breaks, and simple arpeggios. Resistance D pulls out all the punches making this a simply slammin' EP.
Steven St. James is host of One Brother In the Basement, which brings you the best of underground dance music, featuring trance, tribal, house, and breakbeat. Forget the alternative, go real underground. Wednesday from 9 am to noon on WRUW 91.1 FM in Cleveland.

prisingly little attitude about less than perfect synchronization. Oasis is the perfect word for where the Wranglers dance. For one night a week, here's a place where no apologies need to be made for city slickers with country tastes. On Sundays, the Oasis home.

Meeting people is what Wranglers seem to do best. If you aren't part of a gay or lesbian social club, attending Wrangler Spring Roundup
a
could make you sick with jealousy. The recent third annual Roundup was held over the April 15-17 weekend. Around 450 lesbian and gay country dancing fanatics from Cincinnati, Columbus, Toronto and Chicago converged on Cleveland. I'll never forget the thrill of riding a country-dancing queer-filled Lolly the Trolley on the Saturday tour of Cleveland, with stops for dancing at selected landmarks. It was too droll watching unwitting pedestrians clapping along to a good ole gay barn dance on Public Square.
The high point of the tour was the congenial spirit that flourished between Cleveland Wranglers and their new friends from out-of-town. Members of Toronto's Lone Rider dance group went out their way to
embrace their sister city by performing Chinese fire drills around guys in parked cars looking for action in Edgewater Park.
The weekend also raised more than $2,500 for the Hotline of the Greater Cleve-

Whether you like country music or not, it's hard to ignore a hobby that gives you an easy excuse to road trip on a regular basis. "Take up a hobby," is the moral here. The rule to follow is make sure the hobby you choose offers optimal travel opportunities.
Charlie's Calendar and the Resource Directory, both found in this paper, are good places to start. Why not try something new? How about starting a gay bocci organization, or a club for queer cross-dressing aquarists?
Better yet, slip into a pair of boots and shuffle on down to the next Rainbow Wranglers or Columbus Stompers event. It's as simple as that.
